How to Keep Pet Hair and Odors Under Control at Home
Living with pets is worth it, but the extra hair and lingering smells can make a home feel harder to manage. The good news is that you do not need to clean nonstop to keep things under control. A few smart habits can make a big difference. Pet allergens and dander are sticky, and regular cleaning routines help reduce what builds up in the home.
Start With the Spots That Collect the Most Hair
Focus first on the places pet hair gathers fastest: rugs, couches, pet beds, corners, and under furniture. Vacuuming regularly helps, and for pet beds, AKC recommends removing excess hair before washing because wet hair can clump and make cleaning harder.
Keep Pet Bedding and Soft Surfaces Fresh
A lot of odor comes from the fabrics your pets use every day. Wash pet beds, blankets, and favorite soft items often, and clean upholstered areas where pets nap. AAFA also recommends washing pet-related items often and keeping pets out of the bedroom if allergies are a concern.
Stay Ahead of Odors, Do Not Just Cover Them
When accidents happen, clean the area thoroughly instead of just masking the smell. The Humane Society advises using a cleaner designed to eliminate urine odor, and it specifically says to avoid using steam cleaners on urine odors in carpet because heat can set the smell. For litter areas, the Humane Society also advises avoiding strong scents near the litter box.
Brush, Wipe, and Groom Regularly
Hair control starts with the pet, not just the house. AAFA notes that bathing and brushing pets often may help reduce allergens, and wiping pets down after they come inside can help remove pollen and outdoor residue.
Improve the Air Too
Hair and dander do not only sit on surfaces. They also affect indoor air. EPA says portable air cleaners and HVAC filters can reduce indoor air pollution, though they cannot remove all pollutants. This makes filtration a helpful extra step, especially in rooms where pets spend the most time.
